Top Ten Books that Impacted Me in Some Way

I was recently asked to do this on my Facebook Page:

In your status, list 10 books that have stayed with you in some way. Don’t take more than a few minutes and don’t think too hard. They don’t have to be great books, just the ones that have touched you.

Well, I took the time and answered. I thought I’d share it with you guys.

Greetings! Well, let me just shoot from the hip. These are in no particular order… just answering the top 10 I’d like with me on a deserted island.

The Holy Bible: Each day. Every day. Nutrition to the soul

The Road: Cormac McCarthy – Gripping Fiction that shares a struggle for survival between a father and son

Mere Christianity: C.S. Lewis – Takes me places every time I read it

On the Road: Jack Kerouac – The journey of the soul takes us to many different places. Hitch hiking, Train jumping and a beatnik adventure.

Any Hemingway Book – Simple language with a masculine tone is always good!

The Four Hour Workweek: Tim Ferriss ~ I’ve read it a dozen times and I’ll read it a dozen more. Changes life perspective.

Matthew Henry’s Exhaustive Commentary of the Bible: Great wisdom!

Walden: Henry David Thoreau ~ Keeps me thinking and appreciating the little things

The Message Bible – It is it’s own category. I could read this like a novel.

The Poetry of Robert Frost ~ His poem, “The Road Not Taken”, is a short picture of my life and I’d love to get lost in his work.

I know it’s pretty eclectic, but it’s me. What about you? Do you have a top 10? What is it?

Have a great Christmas!

Summer Reading – Some Great Books!

Well, as many of you know I like to read. And… I read a lot! And there is nothing that I enjoy more than taking a summer to dive into some great books. This summer was no different. Some have asked for a list of what I’ve been reading, so here you go.

Maybe you can add a couple of these to your reading list too! Enjoy!

Deep and Wide By: Andy Stanley

Great Book! I like to say that this is like 3 books in one. You hear the inner trouble inside the Stanley family during Charles’ divorce, the inside story behind Andy Stanley’s Northpoint Church and then you get some incredible insight on how to use the principles in your current ministry setting. A must read!

Happy, Happy, Happy By: Phil Robertson

Loved it! You have to know that I am a big fan of “Duck Dynasty” and this book was the icing on the cake. It gives you an inside view into the history of Duck Commander. Phil is very transparent about his highs and his lows. His faith and family are very important parts of his life and you will hear him go into great depth about both.

Next Generation Leader By: Andy Stanley

Are you a leader? Do you influence people? Everyone from business leaders to church leaders to parents need to read this book. I believe that this is the textbook for the Next Generation Leader.

Your Brain at Work By: David Rock

OK… I love productivity and anything that I can learn that will help me with that… I’m game for. This book is different though. It’s not a textbook on the brain, but a story of people and how they react to different situations. It gives you one example… explains why they acted the way they did… and then gives you another scenario with the “right action” based on a new knowledge of the brain. It will help you TONS! Give it a try… you may just like it.

The Seven Practices of Effective Ministry By: Andy Stanley

If you are in the ministry this is a must. The first half is an easy to read story about a baseball game (you have to read it). The principles come to life in a great narrative. Then, for the last half of the book, the principles are unpacked and you are challenged to apply them to your ministry. A must read for every ministry member.

Fields of Gold By: Andy Stanley

So what! I read a lot of Andy Stanley. I relate with the guy and dig his stuff. This book is about generosity and giving and the change that it can make in your life. AWESOME and a quick read.

Four Hour Workweek By: Tim Ferriss

Yes, this was the 17th time that I had read the book and I will probably read it another 17 times. The principles are so radical and easy and dramatic and scary and captivating and exciting that I have to read it over and over again. I agree wholeheartedly with the message and believe that it gives a fresh philosophy on life. If you haven’t read it… do something great for yourself and start today.

Well, that’s all she wrote. That was my summer reading list of 2013. What are you reading? I’d love to hear what is new on your shelves. Leave a comment and I’ll be sure to check them out.

Have a great one and strive to live THE BEST life ever!

“Dad is Fat” Book: Jim Gaffigan, 5 Kids and Truth

I just finished reading Jim Gaffigan’s new book called “Dad is Fat”. Two words… “Hilarious” and “Hot Pocket”. OK ~ That WAS three words, but who’s counting… other than you!

My recommendation… don’t even wait for my thoughts… Buy it now here -> “Dad is Fat”

This book is oh so funny and oh so true. Jim Gaffigan shares with us life with his five kids… YES! FIVE KIDS… in New York City. Everything from walking the streets with the kids to walking up five flights of stairs to his 2 bedroom apartment to walking to the… Yes, he talks a lot about walking… and eating… and cake.

If you like Jim Gaffigan, you’ll LOVE the book. If you  don’t like him, you won’t like the book. Take a gamble and go for it. I don’t think you’ll regret it.

Enjoy!

Personally, I didn’t read this book, but listened to it through Audible. If you dig audiobooks, Audible allows us to hear Jim Gaffigan read it himself. It added a “stand up” feel to the book and made it even better.
